Range Safety Officer (RSO) Certification

Become a certified NRA Range Safety Officer, taught in person by a Chief RSO.

Who it's for
Anyone who wants to become a certified NRA Range Safety Officer, including club members and range staff who need the credential.
Prerequisites
None. Open to responsible adults; no prior RSO experience required.
Length & format
Nine hours, combining classroom instruction and practical exercises on the range.

Overview

This course certifies you as an NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO), the nationally recognized credential for organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations. It's taught in person rather than through the NRA's online-only option, with a Chief RSO running both the classroom and practical portions.

Worth being clear about: this is not the Chief RSO credential. A Chief RSO trains and supervises RSOs and develops range standard operating procedures; this course is how you become the RSO that a Chief RSO would train and supervise.

What you'll learn

  • RSO roles and responsibilities
  • Range standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Range inspection and range rules
  • Range safety briefings
  • Firearm stoppages and malfunctions
  • Emergency procedures

What to bring

  • The attitude to learn, the ability to remain patient, and the willingness to follow instructions. Everything else is taught during the course.
  • This is not a live fire course, so eye and ear protection are not required.
